What makes you're premium higher or lower and what can you do about it?

Below is a guide to the sort of discounts available from insurers. Obviously 

each insurer mayl deal with rating factors differently.

Saving

Age. Insurers rate by age bands ie 21-24 25-29 If you can wait until your birthday it can pay 10-15%
Bike Group. Insurers base their rates on bike groups.  Check out our insurance group guide and choose a lower group model. 10-15%
Value. Insurers may charge extra for higher value bikes. Often on TPFT cover they have a maximum value ie #5000  Don't overstate the value - you won't get paid any more in the event of a claim 2-5%
Age of Bike. Insurers allow age of bike discounts to reflect the lower replacement cost. Choose an older model. See also value and cover. 5-30%
Cover. Comprehensive cover can cost 2-3 times that of TPFT. Consider TPFT especially on bikes more than 2 years old 50%
Garage. Most thefts occur from home especially if they are out in the open.   If you can make a space in the garage or rent/borrow a neighbours. 5%
Alarms. Insurers see these as the main defence against theft Fit one but make sure its approved. See our security page 10%
Tagging. Datatag, Alphadot etc help stop the stolen parts trade. Fit it now. You can DIY this for about £50 3-5%
Bonus. Proof of no claim bonus  enables insurers to reward claim free clients. Don,t cancel a policy a few months before expiry or you will lose a whole years NCB. Allow it to lapse at renewal. Remember it is valid for 2 years from policy expiry. Always keep old policy numbers safe. Consider taking protected no bonus cover. 10-50%
Excess. The amount insurers deduct from a claim payment Ask about voluntary excesses and what discount you will get. 5-22%
Advanced Rider. ie IAM ,advanced police, RoSPA gold Take advanced training course. 5-10%

Many factors described above would if reversed increase your premium ie choosing a higher group bike. There are other factors in the table below that increase your premium.

Convictions: Insurers don't usually mind one minor speeding but will load up to 5 years for other offences. Don't get caught. up to 100%
Thefts:  Theft of bikes is a major problem for insurers. Take every precaution against theft up to 100%
Accidents: Even a small claim will lose your no claim bonus and possibly load your premium. If it's a very minor claim pay it yourself and keep your bonus. Consider no claim bonus protection. up to 50%
Young Drivers: Your premium will be based on the youngest / highest risk rider.  Don't forget to delete riders if they are no longer using the bike. up to 30%
Extra bikes:. Most insurers charge extra for additional bikes but costs can vary. Check the extra charge for additional bikes. 10-20%
Foreign Travel: Many insurers now include free foreign travel. Check if any extra charges apply for foreign use before taking out the policy. £20 - £50
Modifications: If they increase performance or value it will probably increase the premium. Check out any extra costs before modifying your bike. 10-15%
