Theft risk : However careful you are there are lowlifes out there who want your bike. We even seen client's garages dismantled brick by brick to get at a bike and bikes dragged up and over the car parked behind in the garage. As the only deterrent the magistrates offer these crooks is a adventure weekend diving with dolphins, it is up to you to do what you can to protect you bike. If your bike is stolen you stand to lose your pride and joy for good (very few bikes are ever recovered) have to pay a policy excess on your claim, lose your no claim bonus and wait many weeks for the insurers to issue a cheque.  

Alarm Discounts : Due to the high incidence of theft of motorcycles many insurers are offering discounts of about 10% for the fitment of approved alarm /immobilisers. In the case of higher grouped bikes it is now commonplace for the insurer to make alarm fitment compulsory.

Garaging Discounts: If you can garage your bike this will usually attract a discount of about 10%. In some areas garaging may be compulsory for some insurers to offer cover. A garage is generally considered to be a brick/concrete/steel construction with a secure roof and lockable door. Even if you haven't got a garage can you rent one nearby or use a neighbour's?  Beware many insurers may not accept the bike being garaged away from your home address ie your parents as they feel the bike may well end up parked in the road outside your own address after a heavy night!

Other measures : If you haven't got a garage you can still protect your bike  better   by keeping it out of sight to the rear of your house or under a bike cover. Don't leave your bike out at the front of your house during the day.

Approved Alarm Table

Below are the popular approved alarms. Not all insurers accept all these alarms so always check before purchase. Expect to pay £250-350 for the alarm professionally installed. You must get the certificate of fitment to show your insurers and keep it safe for future years for different insurers/ when you sell the bike.
